Stationery: Don’t spend a fortune & keep it coming all year round, Marlin

Back to school shopping is exciting. I love it. I loved it at school and I love it as a mom. Stationery isn’t JUST for back-to-school though – we know that your kokis will dry up within the first two weeks. Lids will be lost, crayons will be broken and things lent out and lost with no hope for return. Pens run out and glue sticks dry out faster than a bunny to a carrot. Stationery is a year-round treasure in our home.
My boys love Mister Maker (a series about arts and crafts) and their favorite activities involve black sheets of paper and endless imagination. My boys treasure a new box of crayons as much as they do a new Spider-Man figurine – in fact Noah definitely loves drawing and coloring more. He spends hours at his little table writing his name and drawing little creatures he made up … Read the rest

What I learned about the world this week & how I changed my life. No really

These past two and a half… three… I don’t know, these past few months have been high as a kite and also as low as our dead and buried hamster (sorry Chicken). Without going full on ‘this is my life story’ cringe… These past few months have pushed me. Pushed me like a happy dog in to a wet bath, pushed me like new school shoes on your first day, like chocolate pudding when you’re already fat.
I have a little rule about the Raising Men blog… (yes we are very professional and have rules around here) (lol) and that is that I don’t talk about stuff on Raising Men that my kids don’t already know about. Like family things, like proper grown-up things that involve them. I don’t know, it’s just like I’d sort of be talking behind their backs if I did, you know? We all go through … Read the rest

Noah you clever little handsome genius you. My heart BURSTS for you boy

I don’t know where you get this from – definitely not from me. Well, maybe a little bit but not at all actually. You have become extremely interested in having money. You have this cool little wallet and sometimes when you do special (not every day) chores around the house, then you are rewarded with a R5 coin and once even a R10 note for your efforts. Sometimes Granny or Gaga will slip you a shiny penny for spoils, but you have been spending your time collecting all kinds of money. I like taking you down to the corner shop to buy your own thing with your OWN hard earned change. You’re super generous and last time we went you even bought Benjamin a little something – ice creams I think it was. When we got home you looked in your wallet and said “Mommy I don’t want to go … Read the rest

Hello 2014. Come in, sit down… relax. Can I get you a cup of tea. A biscuit?

Today marks the first working day of the new year. Also known as the day the boys went back to school and the nanny is back and I know what day of week it is. Such a perfectly cool day, promising mails in my inbox and a house as quiet as a baby mouse. It’s going to be a GOOD year for all of us, I can feel it in my bunny tail.
I’ve started eating fiber bran every single morning and it’s made the hugest (big like the sky) difference in my energy levels and erm… my *cough* well… Things are working like clockwork in well… it’s like there’s a little Thomas The Tank Engine down there marching around and getting things to the station on time. I wake up feeling thin & energetic, which makes such a difference as you know or can imagine. All Bran Flakes has … Read the rest

Noah Nicholas William and Benjamin Nicholas by Paul Clark December ’13

My brother Paul snapped some pictures of Noah and Benjamin while in Betty’s Bay. We went for a little sunset beach play, so I love how natural and carefree these are. My babas aren’t babas anymore. Heck, they’re not even toddlers. Noah is going to the biggest class at school next week and they turn FIVE and FOUR this year. As I type this you’re having a spoon fight in the kitchen and one of you is naked. You’ve become so close and really enjoy each others company. Your personalities suit as if you were especially, custom wired for your friendship. You are both so heartbreakingly beautiful and SUCH good kids / clowns / monkeys / planes / doctors / froggies / crocodiles / sharks or whoever you are right now. I am so proud of your little hearts and clevers and faces every single day. Now go put some … Read the rest
